Lines, creases and wrinkles, oh my! Humans are naturally expressive beings, and we use our facial muscles to laugh, cry, and express an array of emotions on a daily basis. This along with effects of aging, it’s no wonder that over time we begin to see our faces develop imperfections such as wrinkles, deep creases and hollows. Fine lines and wrinkles may be treated with Botox injections. However, deep lines and hollows that develop with age are treated with dermal fillers, and they are magically transformational.

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers like Juvederm and Restylane are only available through a trained and experienced professional. These contain a substance called hyaluronic acid, which is found naturally in the skin. The injectable hyaluronic acid is in the form of a smooth gel which is combined with a local anesthetic, decreasing the discomfort associated with each treatment. Radiesse, is another dermal filler which is made of calcium hydroxylapatite, which also helps eliminate deep wrinkles and fill hollows.

Juvederm, Restylane, and Radiesse offer several different variations of fillers, which are used for:

  • deep creases of the face
  • restoring facial volume
  • lip augmentation
  • facial reshaping such as the nose
  • hand rejuvenation

Depending on the product, injection technique and area of treatment, results may last from 6 to 24 months.

What to Know Before and After:

Scheduling dermal filler injections is not uncommon before an important date or event, but keep in mind that it is ideal to schedule the appointment one to two weeks in advance to allow the treated area to recover from any swelling or bruising. You should also refrain from taking any anti-inflammatory medications or blood thinners such as Advil, Motrin, or Aspirin one week before to minimize bleeding during the procedure. Ice packs are provided and should be applied post-procedure to decrease swelling and bruising. In addition to ice, more moderate to severe bruising can be treated by taking Arnica Montana, a homeopathic medicine that helps with bruises and muscle soreness.
