Blepharoplasty Basics

Blepharoplasty Basics

Eyelids got you down and feeling heavy? You’re definitely not alone and there’s a reason why you may have become unsatisfied with the appearance of your eyelids. During the natural aging process, the eyelids lose the youthful elasticity they once had, causing sagging, drooping and heaviness. Unfortunately, aging affects the lower eyelids as well. As the eyelid skin stretches, the muscles begin to weaken resulting in the development of fatty bulges underneath the eyes.

The severity of the aging eyelids is not only dependent on genetic factors, but is also affected by lifestyle. Most importantly, the eyelids are what surrounds the eye itself, and can cause impaired vision due to droopy upper eyelid skin. The good news, however, is that there is a procedure called Blepharoplasty which can restore more youthful and refreshed eyes!

What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, also known as “Eyelid Lift”, can be performed on both upper and lower eyelids depending on the severity of aging and vision impairment. For Upper Blepharoplasty, the amount of skin, muscle and fat to be removed is determined in order to restore a more natural and youthful appearance. During the procedure itself, a specific technique is performed where incisions are made along the natural creases of the eyelid to avoid visible scarring and preserve a cosmetic appearance. Sutures are then applied for the recovery process which may last from two to three weeks.

Lower Blepharoplasty is also performed to restore a youthful appearance through the removal of excess skin and fat pockets underneath the eyes. There are two common techniques used to address the lower eyelid:

Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty:

During Transconjunctivial Blepharoplasty, the excessive fat under the eye is removed or repositioned by making an incision inside the lower eyelid. Ideal candidates are those who are younger and have minimal excessive skin under the eyes.

Transcutaneous Blepharoplasty:

Transcutaneous Blepharoplasty differs in that the excess fat and or skin is removed by means of making a precisely placed incision a few millimeters below the lower eyelid. This is a technique that is typically performed on older patients or those who have much more skin to be removed on the lower eyelid.

What Are the Benefits of Blepharoplasty?

  • Lines and wrinkles are reduced
  • Excessive skin and fat is removed
  • It improves the eyelids’ contour and symmetry
  • Pain and discomfort is minimal
  • Improves the overall appearance of the eyes
  • Scars are hidden or invisible
  • Eliminates bags and bulges under the eyes
  • Reduces upper eyelid heaviness to improve vision

Who is a Good Candidate?

Ideal candidates for Blepharoplasty are those who are generally not satisfied with the appearance of their aging eyelids due to excessive, heavy skin or under-eye bulges. In some extreme cases, patients who have impaired vision due to sagging and heavy upper eyelids may be able to undergo Blepharoplasty through their medical insurance. However, in order to undergo this procedure, every candidate should be in good overall health and have no current diseases of the eyes.
